Setting Your Cleanup Crew Up for Success
Springtail Care
1. Release into a moist, established substrate
Springtails need a damp substrate to thrive - Bioactive soil mixes with leaf litter or sphagnum moss work best. Avoid dry enclosures.2. Maintain humidity and temperature
Keep humidity moderately high with temperatures between 22 to 28°C, ideal conditions in Singapore's tropical climate. A light misting every week helps maintain the moisture they need.3. Feed lightly if needed
In an established bioactive terrarium, springtails will feed naturally on mould, decaying plant matter, and waste. If your setup is new or low on organic material, a light sprinkle of fish flake, yeast, or raw rice grains helps the colony establish quicker.4. Let nature do the work
Springtail populations self-regulate based on food availability, so there's no need to manage numbers. If they overpopulate, simply reduce feeds.5. Watch for visible activity
A healthy colony will be visibly active on the substrate surface. If you don't see activity within 1 to 2 weeks, check humidity levels first. This is the most common cause of a stalled colony. Otherwise, snap some images and send us an email at [email protected]!
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
1. How long does it take for springtails to establish in my terrarium?
Most colonies show visible activity within 2 weeks and reach a stable, self-sustaining population within 4 to 6 weeks, depending on humidity, temperature, and available food source.2. Will springtails harm my plants or animals?
No. Springtails are harmless to live plants, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. In fact, they keep your plants alive by feeding exclusively on mould, fungi, and decaying organic matter.3. How are the springtails shipped, and will they survive delivery?
Cultures are shipped live in secure, humidified containers with adequate moisture to survive transit comfortably within Singapore. Your orders will reach you in 3 to 5 working days! Otherwise, do reach out via email at [email protected].4. Can I keep Red and Orange Springtails together in the same terrarium?
Yes, both species can coexist in the same bioactive setup. Some keepers combine them for both functional cleanup coverage and visual variety, since they occupy the same ecological niche without competing aggressively.5. My terrarium already has mould. How many springtails should I add?
For an existing mould issue, a larger starter culture (50 to 100) will bring it under control faster than a smaller one. Once established, the colony will continue to regulate mould and waste levels on an ongoing basis without needing repeat additions.
